Chamonix or Zermatt, July and August 2009

Climbing in the Alps Climbing an alpine ridge high above Chamonix View of the Matterhorn from Zermatt

Chamonix, France this is the birthplace of alpine climbing. It is also the most famous climbing center in the world, for good reason, the mountains here are breathtaking with an abundance of mountains and routes unparallel elsewhere in the world. A week of climbing in Chamonix allows for an excellent introduction to the Alps or for the returning climber a chance to try other classic climbs missed on the first trip. There are many lifetimes worth of climbing to be had in the Chamonix valley alone, from the famous Chamonix Aiguilles to the Aiguilles Rouge across the valley and summits like the Tour Ronde, Dent du Geant, and Mont Blanc itself, the possibilities are endless. The alpine huts and cable cars make access to the mountains very easy and the packs very small, a big plus when considering the scale of some of these mountains. Chamonix itself serves as our valley base with its many charming shops and cafes from which you can enjoy a cool afternoon drink and spectacular view of the mountains from where you’ve just come.

Zermatt is most famous for the Matterhorn. People come from all over the world to stand underneath this most imposing of mountains. Suntoucher Mountain Guides offer trips in the Zermatt Valley that include ascents of the Matterhorn. Suntoucher's head guide, John Kear, has successfully guided the Matterhorn more than a dozen times and guided and climbed extensively on the Zermatt and Saas Valley's other classic climbs including; Monte Rosa, Dom, The Briethorn, and many others. Suntoucher's Matterhorn trips run from 3-7 days for acclimatization and familiarization in order to have maximum success on the Matterhorn.
